The Piece

SheCanCode invited me to write about transitioning into tech without a technical background. The article covers transferable skills, learning on the job, and why the industry needs more diverse perspectives.

The Core Message

There’s more to tech than hard skills. Many highly recruited roles don’t involve coding or computer science—PR, marketing, social media, project management, UX, operations, HR. The list is long.

I started by studying art. My first step into tech was becoming Social Media and PR Manager at Fasthosts. No formal technical knowledge, but extensive experience in creative events, arts, automotive, social media, and public sector PR campaigns. It’s a running joke in the team that we have ‘numbers’ people and ‘vibes’ people. I’m definitely a ‘vibes’ person.

The article covers practical advice: leveraging transferable skills, learning on the job, levelling up through courses and hobbies, and why women especially should be encouraged to bring their existing skill sets into the industry.
